Instructor: Kimberly Johnson
Instructor Bio: Kimberly Johnson, a native of northern Ohio, grew up sewing garments and quilts. She was taught how to sew by her grandmother and grandfather at a young age. She majored in Computer Technology at Hocking College. Afterwards, she worked for several years as a Computer System Manager. When her third child was born, she decided to stay at home to raise her children and started a home-based sewing business. She specialized in bridal wear, costumes, home decor items and alterations. She taught classes to adults and children, acting as a county instructor for home-schooling and 4-H programs. She won several awards in costume, pageant gown and garment categories. After a move to New York in 1996, Kim opened a sewing studio which offered all the usual items but introduced commissioned quilts, finishing them by tying or free-motion skills. For the next 20 years, her love of quilting grew and her business evolved. She ultimately eliminated garment-making and alterations to concentrate on her love of crafts and quilts. She quickly went from being a novice quilter to a seasoned professional and went on to win two awards for quilting workmanship. Kim?s family was transferred to Tennessee in 2016 where she decided to operate a home-based studio and completely concentrate on quilting. Thus, her company, Passageway Quilting, was developed. She purchased a longarm quilting machine in 2017. She accepts orders for commissioned quilts, offers longarm services, teaches classes, designs quilts using the Electric Quilt Company software, and has recently started creating her own quilt patterns utilizing a very unique concept. She is a member of her local quilt guild and a member of the International Association of Creative Arts Professionals. Kim lives in Athens, Tennessee with her husband and two dogs. She enjoys spending time with her grown children and their families including six grandchildren. She raises chickens, enjoys planting and tending her very large garden and fruit orchard. Her family enjoys outdoor activities such as boating, camping and hiking. To inquire about quilt services, patterns or to schedule teaching engagements, you can contact Kim through her website at
